This is a simple thread. Which Star Trek: The Original Series villain do you think Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in the latest JJ Abrams Star Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness? I've put down five options. I know I said four elsewhere, but it may be that Cumberbatch's character may even be an original creation.

The options are:

1. Khan.

Khan Noonien Singh is perhaps the most popular option, the infamous genetically engineered villain from Space Seed and the second Star Trek movie.

2. Gary Mitchell.

This has proved to be another popular possibility, and one I personally think is the case. After all, an old friend of Kirk's gone bad through psychic powers is sure to make this journey an extremely personal one. From the episode Where No Man Has Gone Before.

3. Charlie Evans.

AKA Charlie X, from the episode of the same name. Psychic, psychotic, and generally immature. Imagine the havoc he would wreak on the Federation?

4. Original/Composite.

A possibility that occurred to me while preparing this poll. Every Trekkie fanboy and fangirl is scrambling to figure out who Cumberbatch plays. What if he is playing an original character, or else one who is a combination of one or many of the above?

5. Other.

He may be playing another Star Trek villain that I haven't listed here. Please specify in the posts. I might add a new option if enough people specify the same character, as my knowledge of Star Trek: The Original Series isn't that great.

Khan is most likely i think. The extra footage in the japanese trailer is very reminiscent of the kirk/spock scene in Star Trek 2. (though it could be a red herring) not to mention the guy is obviously a good fighter, which would fit with the super soldier thing. and there is nothing there to indicate extra powers (telekenetics, etc)

there is another possibility, its not a villain at all. What I mean is, it could be a character from TOS, but one that wasn't a villain there. maybe someone that kirk helped in the past in TOS, but in this timeline wasn't able to. (I know there were ones like that, but i'm racking my brain to remember.) or someone else. Chocran maybe?

I went for "Other" and Colonel Phillip Green. I had to do a bit of research (Star Trek Encyclopaedia) since I only vaguely recalled mention of a notorious human war criminal that Kirk battled (albeit not on Earth). Subsequent checks on Google, 'Colonel Green', I came up with THIS which looks like it might fit in with the plot.

Having come up with all this, it probably is a very young Khan after all.

I think it's Khan, just cos he's so famous as a TOS villain. I was going to speculate regarding Colonel Green, but Penners beat me to it :p

The Dread Pirate Roberts.

And yes, I did read the contents of raptornx01's spoiler tag, but I think he's just the latest Dread Pirate Roberts.

Some are speculating that 'John Harrison' is a placeholder.

No, that was a long time ago. And the galaxy it was in was pretty far away.

Maybe it was Beverley Crusher. She never did get any good plotlines. "Trying to prepare an inoculum" will only take you so far. She's gone down hill, mind.
