Just who is the most popular detective?
By this, I don't mean the one with the greatest detectoring skill, but the one we most enjoy watching or reading. So, if anyone wishes to nominate their five most favourite from literature, film, tv, or stage; I can then compile a poll of the top five (or more depending on the spread/amount of interest) most nominated 'tecs on the 1st Oct with the voting to run for a couple of weeks before announcing the winner. Incidentally, detectives that come as a pair, such as Starsky & Hutch for example, only counts as one nomination.

Just to kick off, my five nominations are:
  • 1: Sherlock Holmes
    2: Kojack
    3: 'Dirty' Harry Callahan
    4: Hercule Poirot
    5: Endeavour Morse

Wow! The nominations are looking surprisingly well spread. :p I forgot to say "other than Discworld Characters" as it stands to reason Vimes (or one of the other Watch members) would most likely get the popular vote here. However, I'm not going to change it now so all Vimes nominations still count and will continue to be accepted!

Bickaxe: James Bond doesn't count for this one, :( but I might run a future nominations/poll for the spy & espionage genre later if anyone's interested.

mspanners: I counted your Data nomination as a Sherlock Holmes nomination since Data is not really known for being detective or part of a detective series, as such (although as a trekkie, I also liked his portrayal). Please post again if you want to me to change it to someone else.

BatrickPatrick: Gene Hunt is fine, as is Batman due to his early comic book appearance (although, like with the spy/espionage genre, I might run a seperate Superheroes 'World's Greatest' at a later date.

I have to confess, however, that there are quite a few that I've never even heard off!

I know you have already mentioned him but for me the best detective has to be Sherlock Holmes (the new one not the old one)

Can't think of too many others not already mentioned

Da Gamer: I will be totalling up all the nominations at the end of the month and putting the five (or so, depending on the numbers) with the most nominations into a poll to find an overall winner. So if you want to nominate your top five, I will include them in the tally.
